I woke up one night thinking is it okay to be asked to be blessed, why do we bless the Lord, when He is God Almighty and what does blessing God do to me and my inner man and all this journey of thoughts and conversation with God came from those thoughts. So be blessed as you read and may you want to bless the Lord more and more everyday and every minute of the day:
When I think of David as the shepherd, he not only practiced with his sling shot and stone at protecting his father’s sheep when he killed the lion and the bear, but he continually practiced at worshipping and telling his soul how to bless the Lord. In Psalm 103 he commands his soul and all that is within him to the bless the Lord. He knew the importance of ordering your soul, spirit and body to come into alignment with God. He knew that God was the one who forgives, gives, heals, and redeems us with mercies.
Psalm 103:1-5 ESV Of David. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
David understood that to bless means a higher, more reverential form of praise, to extol God, to glorify, to honour, to worship and adore God. The Word of God also tells us that David was a man after God’s own heart. He had this communion and face to face time with Him in his daily chores. We can also have that time of blessing God in our everyday lives.
Acts 13: 22 NASB After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My will.’
As we bless the Lord and keep our focus on Him and His marvelous benefits, we cannot but help to bless others and also, we know because of the goodness of God our Father that we can ask God to bless us.
The prayer of Jabez shows up in 1 Chronicles right in the middle of this long lineage which can seem boring to read but God chooses to talk about Jabez and his prayer to God and that God granted him what he requested. I find this amazing, encouraging and makes me stand in awe of the Lord’s love for me, the mercies that He has, that I can run to Him and say Daddy, I am hurting and right now my name feels like it means pain like Jabez’s name did but Daddy could you please bless me and take away my pains, my disappointments and Lord I know that I can trust you to enlarge my territory because you are my provider.
1 Chronicles 4:9-10 NKJV 9 Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name [a]Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my [b]territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So, God granted him what he requested.
Jesus also enforced the truth of God the Father as a good Daddy who loves and provides for us when we ask.
Matthew 7: 9-12 TPT “Do you know of any parent who would give his hungry child, who asked for food, a plate of rocks instead? Or when asked for a piece of fish, what parent would offer his child a snake instead? If you, imperfect as you are, know how to lovingly take care of your children and give them what’s best, how much more ready is your heavenly Father to give wonderful gifts to those who ask him?” “In everything you do, be careful to treat others in the same way you’d want them to treat you, for that is the essence of all the teachings of the Law and the Prophets.
So, it is not wrong to ask God to bless us. There are so many scriptures which are Truth of telling us and teaching us to bless the Lord and even how. With blessing God, we have learned and taught ourselves to give of ourselves to God, to honour and worship and praise Him. We have also created a heart and mindset in us that God is able to bless us and therefore we will be a conduit to bless others. We will not be selfish because we have spent time in the presence of our Father and that in that process, we have His heart and His ear. Oh, my goodness that is so exciting to me!
Here are a few more scriptures on blessing others, how the Lord rejoices over us and to continue to bless the Lord because not one word has failed of all His good promises, did you hear that not one word of all of God’s promises has failed. That makes me shout Woo Hoo!
Numbers 6: 24-26 TLB 24-26 ‘May the Lord bless and protect you; may the Lord’s face radiate with joy because of you; may he be gracious to you, show you his favor, and give you his peace.’
Zephaniah 3: 17 NKJV The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”
Psalm 68:35 O God, You are awesome from Your sanctuary. The God of Israel Himself gives strength and power to the people. Blessed be God!
1 Kings 8:56 “Blessed be the Lord, who has given rest to His people Israel, according to all that He promised; not one word has failed of all His good promise, which He promised through Moses His servant.
