How Do I Fight My Battles!

Michael W. Smith has a song called “Surrounded (Fight My Battles)”. The lyrics of the song are:

“The Word of God says, for the spirit of heaviness put on the garment of praise, this is how we fight our battles. Just when you think you’re lost. It may look like I’m surrounded but I’m surrounded by You.”

The line “this is how I fight my battles” is repeated throughout the song many times.

As I laid down to sleep one night the one line of the song of “This is how I fight my battles” kept going over and over in my head but at each interval I heard myself singing:

This is how I fight my battles; I will keep my eyes fixed and focused on Jesus. Hebrews 12:2

This is how I fight my battles; I know what God says about me and that He is with me and that is all that matters, I am a mighty man of valour just like Gideon. Judges 6: 12

This is how I fight my battles; I will be strong and of good courage. Joshua 1: 6, 7 & 9

This is how I fight my battles; I will meditate on the Word of God, day and night, and to do all that is written in it and my ways shall be prosperous. Joshua 1: 8

This is how I fight my battles; I will not be conformed to this world, but I will be renewing my mind to the Word of God. Romans 12: 2

This is how I fight my battles; I will rest my head on Jesus’ shoulder, leaning on Him just like the Apostle John. John 13: 25

This is how I fight my battles; I will stay in His presence, speaking face to face with God just like Moses. Exodus 33: 11

This is how I fight my battles; I will be a man after God’s own heart just like David. 1 Samuel 13: 14

This is how I fight my battles; I will seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness. Matthew 6: 33

This is how I fight my battles; I will clothe myself in the armour of God and I will pray at all times in the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 6: 10-18

This is how I fight my battles; I will walk by the Spirit of God, and I will have the fruits of the Spirit. Galatians 5: 16, 22-23

This is how I fight my battles; I will not be lukewarm about the Lord Jesus Christ. Revelations 3: 14-22

This is how I fight my battles; I will seek God and find Him when I seek with all my heart. Jeremiah 29: 13

This is how I fight my battles; I will love others like Jesus has commanded me. 1 John 3: 23

We could go from Genesis to Revelations, the Ten Commandments, the Sermon on the Mount and find many more ways of how God shows us how to fight our battles.

As I meditate on these verses, I must remember that there are some things that I cannot allow myself to do, or I will drown in my battles and not rise but die and most likely take others down with me. For example, in Galatians 5: 22-23 it lists the Fruits of the Spirit which is only possible to have when you are baptized in the Spirit of God and are abiding with Him. What is amazing is that in Galatians 5: 17-21 it talks about how the flesh sets itself against the Spirit and it lists the deeds of the flesh which are horrendous, and we are told that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5: 21.  God in His mercy, compassion and kindness teaches us how to fight our battles and win.

Thankfully Jesus declares to us that we have an enemy whose desire is to steal, kill and destroy us. John 10: 10.  Our enemy’s major ability is that he will use these amazing biblical stories to shame us and continually nag us that we will never measure up to God’s standards. At least that is what we hear and perceive. We forget or we have never come to the realization that every story in the Bible is God’s love story to us and that God the Father is constantly wooing us back to Him.

God has made the provision for us because Paul writes that “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Romans 8: 37 NKJV

Since I am His child and fashioned in His image, with a purpose and a plan to bring all my frustrations out for the best, that means that I can trust Him while I am going through any battle. I need to stay focused on God’s goodness and to praise the Lord and to be thankful to Him not only for what He does but because of who He is. He is Almighty, the Alpha and Omega, the Angel of the Lord, the Anointed One, Anointed One, Perfecter of our Faith, Bread of Life, Chief Shepherd, the Comforter, the Deliverer, Emmanuel, Everlasting Father, Faithful and True Witness, Gift of God, High Priest, Holy One of Israel, the Great I AM, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Lamb of God, Lion of Judah, Prince of Peace, Rock, Root of David, Sun of Righteousness and so much more.

So, this song’s line of “This is how I fight my battles” is wonderful but the best is that I am “Surrounded by the King” in His amazing love and kindness and that makes me want to praise and thank Him.

Psalm 145:1 CEB I will lift you up high, my God, the true king. I will bless your name forever and always.

Psalm 139: 14 NKJV I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.

Holy Spirit, I thank You for teaching us continually how to fight our battles from cover to cover. You remind us of what we have learned and show us how for each circumstance that we face you provide the answer. Not only that but You encourage us as we fight our battles that we are loved, fearfully made in Your image and that You have a destiny, purpose, and plan for us. You surround us with your strength, presence and anoint us to do battle and to rest in You. Your love continuously overwhelms me, and I want to say thank you one more time for caring for every part of my life, spirit, soul, and body. In Jesus name, Amen.
