July 1, 2023, is Canada’s 156th anniversary of Canadian Confederation. The British North America Act, 1867 passed and the three separate colonies of the United Canadas (Ontario and Quebec now), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were united into a single dominion called Canada. From 1879 to 1982 we were called the Dominion of Canada, so July 1 was named Dominion Day.
Throughout time Canada has become a country of ten provinces and three territories and our nickname is The Great White North, one of the largest countries in the world.
I happen to live in one of the most southern parts of Canada surrounded by the Great Lakes, so we know humidity. When people complain about our winters, I remind them of where they live, Canada or The Great White North.
The name Dominion Day came from our forefathers because they wanted our Country to be a Christian Nation under God.
Our name Dominion of Canada comes from the scripture:
- Psalm 72: 8 NKJV He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.
There are many scriptures carved on our government buildings in Ottawa such as:
- Ephesians 6: 13 NKJV Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
- Psalm 139: 8-10 NKJV If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.9 If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.
- Psalm 72: 1 NKJV Give the king Your judgments, O God, And Your righteousness to the king’s Son.
- Proverbs 29: 18 NKJV Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; But happy is he who keeps the law.
- Nahum 1: 7 NKJV The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.
- Jeremiah 23: 5 NKJV “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
- Psalm 94: 15 NKJV But judgment will return to righteousness, And all the upright in heart will follow it.
- Luke 2: 14 NKJV “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
- Article on the Scriptures by Shafer Parker “Oh Canada! Why Are You The Best?”
I witnessed these scriptures when I was taking tours through the Ottawa Parliament Buildings. One day I hope that I will be able to take a “Scripture Tour”, given by someone who knows the importance of scriptures and trusting God with your country.
On the 100th anniversary of my country, July 1, 1967, when I was just a little girl, the celebrations were more enhanced than other years to celebrate the 100th. I wish I could find the picture to show it on my blog. My mom and her two sisters and I were dressed as ladies in 1867. We had on long dresses, bonnets, the whole works. My remembrance comes from the proof of the photo. I was a cute little girl, just saying.
On the 150th anniversary, July 1, 2017, my husband and I drove from our home in Windsor to Kingston where a ministry was having a gathering to pray for our country. The only major route was so bogged down with bumper-to-bumper traffic plus highway reconstruction and the amount of people going to Ottawa our country’s capital to celebrate 150 years that the time to get to Kingston was almost eleven hours and it is usually six or seven hours. The main highway was so crowded that we were stopped and could get out of our vehicles which is not normal when usually everyone travels at 120 km/hours or more on this highway. Our plans had been to be there the evening before to go to a preservice for worship and prayer, but we obviously did not make it.
Those scriptures on our Parliament Buildings, and prayers have gone up to God the Father in intercession and He never forgets a prayer. The Word of God says that:
- Revelations 5: 8 NKJV Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
I want to encourage you that as you pray for your country no matter the heritage of your country, your family, your ministry, God hears your prayers, and He answers them. Do not give up believing that God will heal your land. He also gives a promise for that in scripture but we as Christ followers have a responsibility in that. God’s people, Christ followers must humble themselves, seek God’s face, pray and continually turning from any way that God calls wicked.
- 2 Chronicles 7: 14 NKJV If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
The Official Lyrics to our National Anthem “O Canada” are.”
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.
With glowing hearts, we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
Father God, I thank You that You are encouraging all of us today either through the anniversary celebration of our country or just through knowing that You hear our prayers, and You answer them in Your time. You are revealing to us more and more that we can trust You with every situation because You are God. Today I am reminded to give thanks for my country and to thank You for my country’s heritage and trust and believe that You are not done with my country, Canada. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.
Feel free to subscribe and share with others to pray for their country.
