Seeds and Weeds

Growing up on a farm and in a farming community I saw the planting process of breaking the ground to prepare to plant the seeds. Depending upon what had been planted in that field the previous year would decide how much breaking of ground was needed before planting the beautiful seeds. Then came the waiting process of seeing the beautiful seeds bursting forth from the ground as plants.

You would see where the planting process had taken better than others because more seeds were coming up and that area of the field was not sparse. Years ago, the rows were planted further apart from each other and each year my mom said that her and her siblings would be out hoeing the soyabeans with my grandmother.

When I was growing up, I never hoed, and I did not appreciate farm life which I do have regrets about today. I wished I would have been more thankful, one day I must write a posting on being thankful.

But I remember when we would take my quiet grandma for a drive in the countryside, she was always looking at the fields to see how clean they were. A dirty field irritated her. A clean field meant very few weeds and a dirty field meant too many weeds to count. I have seen dirty fields where you are wondering where is the crop?

I just remembered that before we were married my husband, while I was away at university he would come to my grandma and papa’s farm, which was an hour’s drive from his home, and he would take my grandfather for a countryside drive. Papa would tell Greg so and so lives there now but before it was someone else’s farm, and they would also look at the crops to see how clean or dirty they were. What beautiful memories that both Greg and I have of being with my grandparents. Thank you, Lord.

Now I find myself whenever I am driving out in the country, I am looking at the soyabean fields, corn fields, wheat fields to see how clean they are and if they are not clean, I am disgusted and want to go pull those weeds or tell that farmer clean up your field!

Weeds are a deterrent to your crop and your harvest price because they are bad for your plants:

  • Weeds rob nutrients from the soil so they will not grow to their full potential.
  • Pests will live in the weeds before eating some of them.
  • Weeds crowd out the healthy plants, they hog the area that is needed for the plants to flourish.
  • Weeds also compete for sunlight; they will shade your plants. Lawn Buddies

Today my son has twenty-four acres of soyabeans and one day I was out walking his property by myself because no one was home, I was praying and when I got to the beans I saw some weeds on the outskirts of the field which I was able to pull but there were a couple of tall weeds in the middle of the field which were crowding out sunlight for the plants around them but because of the height of the beans I could not walk to those weeds and pull that weed out otherwise I would have destroyed his crop.

As I was looking at those couple of weeds in the middle of his field that I could not get to, the Lord brought the parable of The Tares Among Wheat to my remembrance.

  • Matthew 13: 24-30  NASB Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and left. 26 And when the wheat sprouted and produced grain, then the weeds also became evident. 27 And the slaves of the landowner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ 28 And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ The slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?’ 29 But he said, ‘No; while you are gathering up the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and at the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the weeds and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

My son, my father and my grandfather planted good seeds, they did not plant weeds, but when weeds came up they would need to be dealt with and hoed out while it was still possible. If you did not pull those weeds when you could then you could not get to them and would have to leave them until the harvest time. If your field was dirty, full of weeds, those weeds affected your profit from the harvest.

When Jesus taught the parable, He used wheat, and a dirty wheat field has lost its beauty. A clean wheat field is beautiful because it is a gold colour that looks rich and extravagant.

Then the Lord showed me that if I do not deal with the deeds of the flesh which are weeds, that are trying to rob nutrients in my life, pests can live in there, they will crowd out anything healthy in my life and they will steal the Son Light in my life then my field or my life would have lost its beauty, it would not look inviting for others to come to Christ, it would look dead, taste dead and something that you would choke on and want to spew out of your mouth and actually if I allowed the weeds of the flesh in my life then I would not inherit the kingdom of God.

  • Galatians 5: 19-23 NASB Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior, 20 idolatry, witchcraft, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

The Holy Spirit will use anything to reveal another layer of truth to you and for that I am grateful. I pray for you that while driving around your countryside and you see a dirty field of weeds that are affecting someone’s seed and their profit that the Lord will reveal the truth of His Word to you in a deeper revelation which would excite you.

Holy Spirit we are grateful that You came as the teacher and that You never give up on us. I pray that we would all be open to hear Your teaching along with Your encouragement and Your conviction. Help us all to love each part of that and that we would not be afraid to be taught by You because we do want the weeds of the flesh out of our lives so that we are producing the Fruits of the Spirit, in Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
