I heard this statement from a man whose wife was diagnosed with fourth-stage cancer. When she received this diagnosis, she looked at her husband and said, “Statistics are for unbelievers.”
- Merriam-Webster defines Statistics as a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of masses of numerical data or a collection of quantitative data.
Pause and think about this. When we believe any statistics given by society in any form, the government, medical association, economy, media entertainment, or education, we are saying that these statistics given to me by these other organizations are higher than the Lord. These statistics outweigh the Lord thoughts, character, glory, faithfulness, eternity, infinity, righteousness, and His love.
Statistics create doubts and eventually create unbelief.
Doubt calls into question the truth of or lack of confidence in Merriam-Webster.
If we are doubting or questioning the truth of the Lord, or lacking confidence in the Lord, we then step into unbelief. Unbelief will lead us away from the living God. Hebrews 3:12
Our unbelief will quench the Lord from doing many mighty works. Matthew 13:58
Because of this we should place all statistics at the Lord’s feet and pray “Lord, the statistics say this, but I know who You are”.
- Isaiah 40:28-29 NASB Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth Does not become weary or tired. His understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives strength to the weary, And to the one who lacks might He increases power.
The stats tell us to have no hope in healing, but I know the Lord is my healer.
- Jeremiah 17:14 NASB Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; Save me and I will be saved, For You are my praise.
Stats are telling me that I will lose everything because I have no sustainment, but I know the Lord is my provider.
- Philippians 4:19 NASB And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
The stats tell me my sins are not forgivable because they are too messy, but I know the Lord forgives me.
- 1 John 1:9 NASB If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Sometimes it appears the statistics are screaming at you, but in these times, there is nothing else to do but tell the stats of the truth of Jesus Christ. When you think about it this way, the stats sound like the enemy. What we all need to do is stand firm and commit ourselves to who the Lord Jesus Christ is.
- John 1:14 NASB And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
- 1 Corinthians 8:6 NASB yet for us there is only one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.
The Billy Graham Association says faith believes something is true and then commits our lives to it. Thankfully, the Lord always holds His hand out to us to help us move from unbelief to faith and trust.
- Mark 9:24 NASB Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief!”
- 2 Corinthians 5:7 NASB for we walk by faith, not by sight
The best thing we can do when the statistics shriek at us to the point of freezing us is to pray to the Lord. He tells us that faith comes by hearing. Romans 10:17
We might ask, “what will we hear”? The answer is hearing the Lord in prayer. Prayer is a two-way communication with the Lord. Faith will come by listening to the Lord. One of the ways that we can adjust our hearts to God when praying is to have our bible open, and the Holy Spirit will guide us to the scriptures. Remember that God speaks through His Word. Reading the Word of God and listening to Him, then faith will come, and we will be able to tell the statistics given by the world to be quiet.
Whenever I hear the statistics of the world, my greatest desire is to answer those statistics with who the Lord is and what He is capable of.
- Ephesians 3:20 NKJV Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
I hope that this posting has encouraged you to know how to answer the worldly statistics.
Spirit of the Living God, we thank You that Your Word provides all the answers that we need. Help us to spend time with You and listen to You in prayer. I also pray that we will read the Word of God out loud, so we allow a pathway for faith to come to us. Lord, we are grateful that this shows us how to stand against statistics thrown at us each day, in Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
