Staying on the road less traveled requires constant communication, prayer, listening, abiding with the Holy Spirit and determination. It means saying no to many things and at first it may seem like you are saying “No” almost by the minute to those deeds that are in opposition to the Spirit but as you walk by the Spirit as you continue to crucify your flesh which is saying no and it will become easier. As you abide in the Holy Spirit then you will have the fruit of the Spirit.
Galatians 5: 22-26 NASB 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who [k]belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also [l]walk by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.
When I was growing up my grandfather was the paddock manager for horse racing and I saw that the horses were geared with blinders at the side of their eyes so that their peripheral vision which means the side vision would be covered so that they could only see straight ahead to the finish line. This reminds me of the scripture where it tells me to fix my eyes or focus my eyes on Jesus and so many times, we will say the eyes of my heart but first I have to train myself by the guidance of the Holy Spirit so that my natural eyes are focused on Jesus and the eyes of my heart will follow.
Hebrews 12:2 NASB1995 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Isaiah 26:3 NKJV You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.
The road that is mostly travelled will have paths leading to them and the way is already made through the bush, so that the trees have been cleared, rocks have been lifted so that you can move along this path easier, but it is full of the deeds of the flesh.
Galatians 5: 16-21 NASB 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh [g]sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you [h]please. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: [i]immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, [j]factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
However, to stay on the road less traveled what I have to do is to constantly be changing my mind about God, learning of His goodness, His mercies, His love and how I do that is to continue to transform my mind with the reading of the Word of God under the Holy Spirit’s influence. When I do that I am making a new path for me, dependent on how well I have been following that road it may seem like I am acting like a bush whacker with a machete and hacking away all the limbs that are in my way, picking up the rocks or boulders and disposing of them so that I travel this road with the Holy Spirit more easier by the day.
Romans 12: 1-2 NASB Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, [a]acceptable to God, which is your [b]spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this [c]world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may [d]prove what the will of God is, that which is good and [e]acceptable and perfect.
The pictural definition I receive when thinking of walking on the road less traveled compared to those beaten down highways, which are worn, messy with the deeds of the flesh is a scene in one of all time favorite Christmas movies “It’s A Wonderful Life”. It is the scene that George Bailey is running through the small town after the angel gave him his desire of seeing that everyone would have a better life if he would have never been born. He saw that the entire town was taken over by wickedness, greed, immorality, strife, jealousy, and all the deeds of the flesh mentioned in Galatians 5: 16-21.
George finds himself at a bridge, asking God for forgiveness and asks the Lord for his life back then he runs through the town seeing it clean, not as traveled with the deeds of the flesh but now the fruits of the Spirit are reigning. Galatians 5: 22-26.
That is how I see Staying on the Road less traveled because at times you may think it is easier to follow the path already created, you may ask yourself why do I have to work at having constant communion with the Holy Spirit, why do I have to sacrifice what I want, why do I have to have peripheral vision, why do I have to renew my mind, all of this seems like hard work or using a machete and whacking through the wrong thoughts in my mind. But be encouraged as you are obedient to the Word of God, lean into the Holy Spirit and ask for His help, you will be able to do all things through Christ.
Philippians 4:13 NKJV I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Holy Spirit I ask that you would encourage all of us to continue to stay on the road less traveled, to be encouraged to renew our minds with the Word of God, that we would not be conformed to this world and that we would be aware of the deeds of the flesh in our lives and continually spending time in Your presence and becoming more like You so that the fruits in my life are love, joy, peace, patience, kind, good, faithful, gentle and that I would walk in self-control. I thank you Lord that You are able and I can trust you so that I am able to stay on the road less traveled until the day that I walk into Heaven. In Jesus Name, Amen.
