Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day will be celebrated this Sunday, May 14, and for some it is a wonderful day of celebrating with their children no matter the age. They will be receiving handmade cards with magic marker drawings, glue, and sprinkles and most likely there will also be magic marker drawings on a table, and who knows maybe also a wall. Anything can happen when the young children are preparing their cards for their precious moms.

For others they are experiencing pain because their families are in discord, children who have not spoken to their moms in days, months or even years.

For some moms the disruption might be where siblings are not speaking to one another because unforgiveness is reigning.

For other ladies it might be that they have not been able to conceive, and their heart’s desire was to have many children and raise a big family. Others might have had a miscarriage and even though they have other children, their heart aches to know that child who is now in heaven. Others might have lost their children to death at a young age or older, it always seems out of order when a mother has to bury a child.

For others they might have even had an abortion and they have never been able to forget that pain and not able to forgive themselves.

For many of us who desire to be a Godly woman we feel utterly defeated when we read Proverbs 31: 10-31 “The Description of a Worthy Woman”. Our mind will get entangled of how is it possible to be like that Proverbs 31 woman? She can do it all, makes tapestries, runs her own business, always dressed in royalty, she never does her husband evil, she gives food to her household including servants, she plants a vineyard, she has her own merchandise, she always has items in her hand to give to the poor and the lists goes on and on and it actually wears me out and I am depressed.

However, whenever we read the Word of God, we must remember that God is always encouraging us to walk in integrity with Him. Proverbs 11:13 Also that God has called us a chosen race, royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession so that we may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9

My own personal experience with Proverbs 31 came at a time of grief. I was asked to speak at my grandma’s funeral who lived to be 99. She was a very quiet, hard-working woman, grew up in the Great Depression of the 1930’s and knew what hard times meant. I was praying to the Lord asking Him for guidance of what to speak about and the Holy Spirit guided me to:

Proverbs 31: 26-31 NASB She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying: 29 “Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all.” 30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. 31 Give her the product of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.

My grandmother lived this out in more ways than one. She only opened her mouth in wisdom, or she kept silent. She was always kind and if you said something that was not kind, you were corrected and only with a few words. I remember saying something once and I was probably in my 40’s and she corrected me with a soft voice and with five words. It was amazing how she did that. She never raised her voice, she never gossiped, there could be gossip going on around her, but you knew she was not listening, and she never let that ungodly gossip ruin her. She understood what it meant to walk in the fear of the Lord and run straight after Him. She never ate the bread of idleness. Her gardens were huge, she provided the food of the household, constantly canning, baking, cooking, she did not like to dust but as she was aging, she would say I should chase the dust today. Such memories. Her children rose up and called her blessed. I am in tears as I remember her. When I read verse 30 of Proverbs 31, charm is deceitful and beauty is vain but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised, that was my beautiful grandmother.

So today whatever situation you find yourself in as you are preparing for Mother’s Day, remember that the Holy Spirit is encouraging you with all the scriptures. He will heal your broken heart, your broken body, broken family that you may become whole. As you come to Him and ask forgiveness, He forgives.

Holy Spirit I come to You and ask that You would continue to heal all the broken mom’s hearts today, that You would speak to us and encourage us with Your Word. I pray that we will continue to see Your Word as our map, chart, and guide for our pilgrim life here. I pray that we will be encouraged that we have been called and enabled and equipped to be the precious moms by You. I thank You for bringing healing to our tired hearts, bodies, and families today, in Jesus Name. Amen.

Feel free to share and subscribe and let me know what Mother’s Day means to you. Leave a comment about your grandmother, mother or someone who the Lord gave you as a mother figure to bring healing to your tired heart.
